How iOS 18 Notification Summaries Work
Apple Intelligence in iOS 18 introduces notification summaries, a feature designed to condense multiple alerts from busy group chats, email threads, and apps into concise, glanceable overviews. This article explains how the system processes incoming alerts, where these summaries appear on your device, how privacy is preserved during processing, and how you can manage or customize the feature across different applications.
The Underlying Technology
Notification summaries are powered by Apple Intelligence’s on-device language models. When an app sends multiple notifications in a short timeframe, the system analyzes the textual content of those alerts to identify key details, updates, and action items. Instead of presenting a long, repetitive list of individual messages or alerts, iOS 18 synthesizes the information into a short, coherent paragraph or sentence.
Where Summaries Appear
Summaries primarily appear on the Lock Screen and in the Notification Center. When alerts are grouped together, the topmost card displays the generated summary accompanied by a subtle Apple Intelligence icon to indicate that the text was generated by AI.
- Group Chats and Messaging: Active threads are distilled into status updates, such as noting who agreed on dinner plans or which topic is being debated.
- Email Threads: Multiple replies in Mail are condensed to highlight the latest developments or critical questions asked.
- News and Social Media: Successive breaking news alerts or social app pings are grouped into brief situational updates.
Tapping on a summarized notification stack expands it, allowing you to view each individual notification in chronological order.
Integration with Focus Modes
Notification summaries work in tandem with a dedicated Focus mode called "Reduce Interruptions." This mode relies on the same contextual understanding to evaluate the urgency of incoming alerts. Non-urgent notifications are silently gathered and summarized for later viewing, while notifications deemed critical or time-sensitive—such as a delivery arrival or a direct urgent question—are allowed to break through the filter immediately.
Privacy and Data Security
Apple Intelligence processes notification summaries directly on the device using the Apple silicon neural engine. Your personal messages, emails, and app alerts are not sent to external servers for basic summarization. In cases where more complex requests require Private Cloud Compute, data is processed on dedicated Apple silicon servers with cryptographic verification, ensuring that the contents of notifications are never stored, logged, or accessible to Apple.
Customization and App Controls
Users maintain granular control over which applications are summarized:
- Open Settings on iOS 18.
- Select Notifications.
- Tap Summarize Notifications.
From this menu, the feature can be toggled on or off entirely. Below the master toggle, a list of installed apps allows you to enable or disable summaries on a per-app basis, ensuring you only receive AI-generated overviews from the services you choose.
