How iOS 18 Masks IP Addresses for ChatGPT

Apple's iOS 18 integrates OpenAI's ChatGPT directly into system experiences like Siri and Writing Tools, backed by strict privacy protections designed to shield user identity. To ensure user privacy, Apple employs an automated IP address masking system alongside request anonymization, preventing OpenAI from tracking individual users or associating queries with their physical network locations.

Apple’s Proxy Architecture

When a query is handed off to ChatGPT in iOS 18, it does not establish a direct network connection from the user's device to OpenAI's servers. Instead, Apple routes the request through a secure proxy infrastructure.

During this process:

  • IP Obfuscation: Apple's proxy strips the user's actual, unique IP address and substitutes it with a generic, localized IP address controlled by the proxy network.
  • Location Generalization: OpenAI receives only broad geographic context sufficient to return regionally relevant answers (such as local time or language nuance), but cannot pinpoint the user's precise location, internet service provider, or home network.
  • Separation of Identity: Apple does not transmit device identifiers, Apple Account details, or any other personal telemetry alongside the prompt payload.

Zero-Logging and Data Protection

Beyond IP address masking, iOS 18 applies a stateless data agreement for users accessing ChatGPT without an account:

  • No Storage: OpenAI is contractually bound not to store or log prompts submitted through the default iOS 18 integration.
  • Model Training Exemption: Requests routed through the masked Apple pathway are explicitly barred from being used to train or refine OpenAI’s foundational models.
  • Transient Processing: Once the response is generated and sent back through the proxy to the device, the session data is discarded.

Exceptions for Logged-In Accounts

The automated IP masking and zero-logging protections apply by default to all standard Siri and system-level ChatGPT queries. However, if a user voluntarily links an existing ChatGPT account to iOS 18 to access paid features (such as higher-tier models), Apple's proxy protections are bypassed. In that scenario, queries are governed by OpenAI's standard privacy policy, allowing OpenAI to log network data and associate requests with the user's specific account.
