How iOS 18 Mail Digest View Groups Promotions

Apple’s iOS 18 introduces an upgraded Mail app that uses on-device intelligence to categorize messages and streamline communication through a feature called Digest View. By identifying marketing emails, newsletters, and receipts originating from the same merchant, Digest View gathers them into a unified, interactive hub rather than leaving them scattered across your inbox. This system enables users to browse a single business's communications chronologically, pinpointing relevant discounts, tracking updates, and account alerts without inbox clutter.

Intelligent On-Device Categorization

The consolidation process begins with Apple Intelligence categorizing incoming messages. Mail uses local machine learning models to analyze message metadata, sender domains, and content structure. Emails are sorted into primary categories: Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions. Promotional emails from commercial entities are automatically tagged and funneled into the Promotions tab, preventing non-urgent marketing pitches from interrupting high-priority correspondence.

Merchant-Specific Grouping

When multiple emails arrive from a single business—such as promotional campaigns, seasonal sales announcements, and loyalty updates—Mail links them using the sender’s verified domain profile. Instead of treating each broadcast as an isolated thread, iOS 18 groups these items into a cohesive Digest for that specific brand. Tapping on a message from a merchant opens a consolidated interface that displays all active communications from that sender in one place.

The Digest View Interface

Inside the Digest View, the Mail app presents emails in a clean, visual timeline:

  • Featured Updates: The most time-sensitive or actionable information, such as an active flash sale code or a shipping confirmation, is pinned prominently near the top.
  • Chronological History: Older marketing campaigns and past announcements appear below in reverse chronological order, allowing users to scroll through past offers easily.
  • Quick Actions: The interface includes bulk management tools, allowing users to archive, delete, or mark as read all accumulated promotions from that merchant with a single tap.

Managing Consolidated Messages

Digest View maintains user control by allowing individual message handling within the bundle. You can interact with a specific discount code, forward a specific newsletter, or mark an individual email as unread without affecting the rest of the collection. If an email is miscategorized, you can reassign the sender to the Primary inbox or another designated category, training the on-device model to adapt to your personal preferences moving forward.
