How Genmoji Sync Across Apple ID Devices in iOS 18

With the rollout of Apple Intelligence in iOS 18, users can design custom emojis known as Genmoji. This article explains how these generated characters automatically synchronize across all your Apple devices sharing the same Apple Account (formerly Apple ID), how iCloud handles their storage, and how non-AI compatible hardware still accesses your creations.

The Underlying Technology: NSAdaptiveImageGlyph

Unlike traditional emojis standardized by the Unicode Consortium, Genmoji are dynamic image assets powered by Apple’s NSAdaptiveImageGlyph API. This framework allows high-resolution, rich-image glyphs to behave like standard typography—scaling, formatting, and sitting inline with text.

Because they are rendered as visual glyphs rather than raw Unicode characters, your custom Genmoji are saved and managed as personal assets tied directly to your user profile.

iCloud Stickers Synchronization

When you generate a new Genmoji on an Apple Intelligence-compatible device:

  1. Automatic Cloud Backup: The newly created glyph is instantly registered in your personal sticker library and backed up to iCloud.
  2. Apple Account Propagating: Through background iCloud synchronization, the metadata and graphic files push to all connected devices signed in with the same Apple Account.
  3. Keyboard Integration: Once synced, the Genmoji populates in the standard Emoji keyboard under the Recents section, as well as inside the dedicated Stickers tab across all your devices.

For this seamless sync to function, iCloud Drive and Messages in iCloud must be enabled within your Apple Account settings.

Cross-Device Compatibility and Legacy Support

While creating Genmoji requires a device equipped with Apple Intelligence (an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 series, or M-series iPad/Mac), synchronization is not restricted to AI-capable hardware.

Older devices running iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, or watchOS 11 will still sync and display your custom Genmoji. Because the assets synchronize via standard iCloud sticker libraries, you can select and send previously generated Genmoji from any updated device logged into your Apple Account, even if that specific device cannot generate new ones.
