How App Settings Are Organized in iOS 18

Apple redesigned the Settings app in iOS 18 to declutter the main interface and make system navigation significantly faster. Instead of populating the primary menu with an endless list of third-party downloads and built-in tools, iOS 18 consolidates all app-specific configurations into a single, unified "Apps" section located at the bottom of the main Settings screen.

The Unified "Apps" Menu

Prior to iOS 18, the main Settings menu displayed Apple’s native applications in several distinct blocks, followed by an exhaustive alphabetical list of every installed third-party app. In iOS 18, that sprawling list has been removed from the main view entirely.

To manage individual applications, you now scroll to the bottom of the primary Settings screen and tap the dedicated Apps entry. This acts as a centralized directory containing every installed application on your device.

Alphabetical Sorting and Fast Navigation

Once inside the unified Apps menu, applications are arranged in a clean, alphabetical list. To help users navigate large app libraries efficiently, the interface includes two primary navigation tools:

  • Top Search Bar: A dedicated search field at the top of the screen allows you to instantly filter by app name.
  • Alphabetical Scrubber: An alphabet index runs along the right-hand edge of the screen, letting you tap or drag to jump directly to a specific letter.

Consolidation of Native and Third-Party Apps

A major change in this redesign is the integration of Apple's default applications. Core system utilities such as Safari, Messages, Mail, Camera, and Photos are no longer scattered across the main Settings page. Instead, they sit directly alongside third-party software like Instagram, Spotify, and WhatsApp within the Apps directory, creating a uniform experience for managing any application regardless of its developer.

App-Specific Preference Panes

Tapping on any app within the list opens its standardized configuration page. While the path to reach this page has changed, the internal controls remain familiar. From this screen, you can manage:

  • Privacy Permissions: Access to Location Services, Contacts, Photos, Microphone, Local Network, and Bluetooth.
  • Notification Preferences: Badges, alerts, and sound configurations specific to the selected app.
  • Background Activity: Toggles for Background App Refresh and Cellular Data usage.
  • Custom App Settings: In-app preferences exposed to the system, such as default video playback quality, language selection, or measurement units.
