Does iOS 18 Clean Up Add Watermarks or Metadata?

Apple's AI-powered Clean Up tool in iOS 18 allows users to remove unwanted objects and distractions from photos with a single tap. While the tool does not apply any visible watermarks to your pictures, it does record specific metadata indicators identifying that the image has been altered using generative artificial intelligence.

Are There Visual Watermarks?

Using the Clean Up tool will not place any visual marks, logos, or semi-transparent stamps on your photo. The output looks like a standard high-resolution edit, leaving the visual pixels intact without any visible branding from Apple or Apple Intelligence.

Metadata Indicators in iOS 18

While the photo appears visually unaltered, iOS 18 embeds clear digital markers into the file's metadata:

  • Photos App Info Label: When you open an edited photo in the iOS 18 Photos app and tap the Info ("i") button, a clear notation appears in the details section indicating the image was modified using "Clean Up."
  • IPTC and EXIF Data: Apple embeds standardized metadata tags into the photo file itself. Specifically, it populates fields indicating digital source type and generative AI modification, aligning with modern standards for synthetic media disclosure.
  • Content Credentials Compliance: By marking the file internally, Apple ensures that platforms, web browsers, and third-party tools that inspect photo provenance can detect that generative inpainting was used to reconstruct parts of the image.

What Happens When You Export or Share the Photo?

If you share the image directly via AirDrop, Messages, or iCloud link with full photo data included, the metadata remains attached. Third-party image viewers and EXIF readers can inspect the file properties and identify the edit.

However, if you take a screenshot of the image, remove metadata using an export tool, or share the image across social media platforms that automatically strip EXIF data (such as WhatsApp, X, or Instagram), the internal metadata indicators may be removed. Even in those cases, the photo will still contain no visible watermarks.
