Do You Need a ChatGPT Subscription for Siri in iOS 18?

Users do not need a separate paid subscription to use ChatGPT through Siri in iOS 18. Apple has integrated OpenAI’s chatbot directly into Apple Intelligence, allowing anyone with a compatible device to access ChatGPT’s capabilities for free without creating an account or paying for a tier like ChatGPT Plus. While a paid subscription is entirely optional, subscribers can connect their existing accounts to access premium features.

Free Access Out of the Box

When Siri encounters a query that would benefit from ChatGPT—such as generating text, analyzing photos, or answering complex world knowledge questions—it asks for your permission to share the request with OpenAI.

You do not need to log in or purchase a ChatGPT plan to use this feature. Apple provides free access to OpenAI's models directly through the operating system. For free users, Apple and OpenAI have implemented strict privacy protections: your IP address is obscured, and OpenAI does not store or use your requests to train its models.

Connecting an Existing Paid Subscription

If you already pay for a ChatGPT Plus or Team subscription, iOS 18 allows you to link your account in the device settings. Doing so provides access to your paid benefits, including:

  • Higher usage limits on advanced models.
  • Access to specialized capabilities associated with your account tier.
  • Synchronization with your personal ChatGPT history across other devices.

Linking an account means OpenAI's standard data-use policies apply instead of the anonymous protections provided for non-logged-in users.

Device Requirements

While the ChatGPT service itself is free to use through Siri, you must have a device capable of running Apple Intelligence. This requires iOS 18.1 or later on an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model, as well as iPads and Macs equipped with M-series chips.
