Different App Icon Colors per Page in iOS 18
While iOS 18 introduces unprecedented Home Screen personalization—allowing users to freely tint app icons, adjust their sizes, and place them anywhere on the grid—it does not natively support setting distinct icon color themes for individual Home Screen pages. When you apply a color tint or toggle between Light and Dark icon styles, that choice is applied globally across all pages and the App Library. This guide covers how the new theming engine operates, why per-page themes are restricted, and the available workarounds.
How iOS 18 App Icon Theming Works
In iOS 18, entering jiggle mode and tapping Edit > Customize opens a bottom sheet with four distinct icon appearance options:
- Automatic: Icons switch between light and dark variants based on your system appearance.
- Dark: Forces dark-themed icons across all supported apps, regardless of whether system Dark Mode is active.
- Light: Keeps standard, colorful app icons permanently visible.
- Tinted: Converts all app icons to a monochromatic shade that you can manually pick using an eye-dropper tool, hex sliders, or an automatic match with your wallpaper.
Because this customization setting resides at the system level rather than the page level, selecting any of these styles instantly updates every single icon on your device.
Can Focus Modes Provide Different Icon Colors?
Apple allows users to link custom Home Screen pages and unique wallpapers to specific Focus Modes (such as Work, Personal, or Sleep). While a Focus Mode can hide or reveal specific pages and swap your wallpaper, it cannot switch the global icon tint. If your device is set to a blue tint, it will remain blue across every Focus profile.
Workarounds for Page-Specific Aesthetics
If your goal is to have completely different visual styles across pages, you must use alternative customization methods:
- The Shortcuts App: Create custom bookmark shortcuts for your apps. You can design individual glyphs and colors for each shortcut, allowing you to manually build a red-themed page, a green-themed page, or a minimalist black-and-white page.
- Color-Coded Wallpapers and Widgets: You can assign distinct wallpapers to individual Focus Modes and combine them with large color-matched third-party widgets. Setting the native icon style to Dark or Clear allows the unique background of each page to drive the overall visual theme.
At present, direct per-page icon tinting is not supported in iOS 18, and achieving that level of separation requires third-party assets or manual Shortcut configurations.
