Custom Mail Category Notifications in iOS 18
Apple’s iOS 18 introduces automated inbox categorization to the native Mail app, organizing messages into Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions. However, users cannot set independent, custom notification rules for each individual category. While you cannot assign distinct sounds, badges, or alerts to specific categories like Transactions or Promotions, iOS 18 provides alternative ways to filter and prioritize your incoming email alerts.
Mail Categorization in iOS 18
The redesigned Mail app uses on-device intelligence to sort incoming emails into four dedicated tabs:
- Primary: Personal correspondence and time-sensitive messages.
- Transactions: Receipts, order confirmations, and shipping updates.
- Updates: Newsletters, social media alerts, and general notifications.
- Promotions: Marketing emails, sales offers, and coupons.
While this system organizes your inbox layout, the settings do not extend to granular per-category alert preferences.
Why You Cannot Set Category-Specific Alerts
In iOS 18, notification controls in the Mail app remain tied to email accounts and special designations rather than category tabs. The Notification Settings menu treats the inbox as a unified feed for alert delivery. Consequently, you cannot mute the Promotions tab while keeping banner notifications active exclusively for Transactions.
Alternatives for Managing Mail Notifications
Although category-level custom alerts are unavailable, several built-in iOS 18 features allow you to filter which messages trigger notifications:
- Priority Notifications (Apple Intelligence): On supported devices running iOS 18, Apple Intelligence scans incoming messages and bubbles up the most urgent emails to the top of your lock screen, bypassing standard inbox clutter.
- VIP Sender Lists: You can add important contacts to your VIP list. In Settings > Mail > Notifications, you can configure custom alert sounds and banner styles exclusively for VIP senders.
- Custom Account Settings: If you separate your personal, work, and promotional sign-ups across different email accounts, you can assign different notification behaviors to each account individually.
- Thread Muting: If a specific conversation or promotional thread is generating excessive alerts, swipe left on the thread in the inbox and select More > Mute to silence it without affecting the rest of your incoming mail.
- Focus Filters: By linking your Mail accounts to Focus modes (such as Work or Personal), you can silence notifications from selected inboxes during specified hours.
