Collapsible Section Headers in iOS 18 Notes

In iOS 18, Apple introduced collapsible section headers to the Notes app, giving users a built-in way to organize and streamline lengthy documents. This feature allows you to collapse any content nested under a header format, hiding paragraphs, bullet points, or media until you need them. By reducing visual clutter, establishing a clear visual hierarchy, and speeding up document navigation, collapsible headers transform Apple Notes into a more capable tool for managing complex information.

How Collapsible Headers Work

Any text styled as a Title, Heading, or Subheading automatically becomes a collapsible anchor. When you tap the area to the left of the header, a small arrow icon (chevron) appears. Tapping this chevron collapses everything beneath the header up until the next section break of an equal or higher hierarchy level. Tapping it again instantly expands the content.

Reducing Visual Clutter

Long-form documents such as meeting minutes, research papers, or project roadmaps can become overwhelming on a mobile screen. Collapsible sections allow you to tuck away completed steps, background research, or extensive data tables. This minimizes continuous scrolling and keeps your screen clean, presenting only the primary topics until you choose to inspect the details.

Establishing Clear Document Hierarchy

Collapsible headers support multi-level organization:

  • Headings: Collapse all text and any smaller subheadings nested underneath.
  • Subheadings: Collapse only the specific content within their immediate subsection.

This hierarchical folding mirrors desktop outline processors, making it simple to structure documents logically. Users can view a high-level table-of-contents view of their note just by collapsing all primary headings.

Improving Search and Mobile Navigation

Navigating a multi-page note on an iPhone typically requires extensive swiping. With collapsible headers, you can fold sections you aren't currently editing to quickly jump between distant parts of a file. When searching for a keyword inside a note, iOS 18 will also automatically expand a collapsed section if the matching text is located inside it, ensuring information remains readily accessible without sacrificing organization.
