Auto Convert iOS 18 Reminders to Calendar Entries

With the release of iOS 18, Apple introduced native integration between the Reminders and Calendar apps, allowing scheduled and time-sensitive reminders to appear automatically within your calendar timeline. While these entries remain structurally classified as reminders rather than traditional calendar event objects, they display directly alongside your appointments by default, eliminating the need for third-party syncing tools or manual entry duplication.

How the Integration Works in iOS 18

In iOS 18, any reminder assigned a specific date and time automatically populates in the Calendar app. When you set a deadline or alert for a task in Reminders, Calendar plots that item onto your daily, weekly, or monthly schedule according to its designated time slot.

Key behaviors include:

  • Inline Display: Reminders appear as interactive blocks directly on the calendar grid alongside standard meetings and events.
  • Direct Interaction: You can mark reminders as complete, edit their titles, or adjust their scheduled times directly from the Calendar interface.
  • Cross-App Syncing: Any changes made inside the Calendar app immediately reflect in the Reminders app, and vice versa.

Reminders vs. Calendar Events: The Technical Difference

While the process is automatic, there is an important distinction between how reminders appear and how traditional calendar events function:

  • Visual Presence: Reminders appear on your schedule like events, but they feature completion circles rather than standard event blocks.
  • Metadata and Sharing: A reminder on your calendar does not support calendar-specific features such as inviting external attendees, adding conference call links, or calculating travel time.
  • Platform Export: Because they remain reminders behind the scenes, they will not sync to external non-Apple calendar services (like Google Calendar or Microsoft Outlook) unless those services independently sync with Apple Reminders.

How to Ensure Reminders Are Visible in Calendar

If time-sensitive reminders are not appearing in your calendar, verify that the display setting is toggled on:

  1. Open the Calendar app on iOS 18.
  2. Tap Calendars at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Scroll down to the Reminders section.
  4. Ensure the checkbox next to Scheduled Reminders (or your preferred reminder lists) is checked.
  5. Tap Done.

Converting Reminders to True Calendar Events

If you require a reminder to become a true calendar event—such as for sending invitations or syncing across enterprise platforms—iOS 18 does not automatically convert the file type natively.

To achieve full conversion, you must use the Shortcuts app:

  1. Create a personal automation triggered by new reminders or run on a daily schedule.
  2. Use the Find Reminders action to locate time-sensitive tasks.
  3. Use the Add New Event action to map the reminder's title, due date, and notes into an actual calendar entry.
