Why iOS 16 Notifications Appear at the Bottom

In iOS 16, Apple introduced a redesigned Lock Screen that shifts incoming notifications to the bottom of the screen instead of displaying them from the top down. This article explains the ergonomic and design reasons behind this change, how the different notification display styles function, and how you can customize the way alerts appear on your iPhone.

The Purpose Behind the Redesign

Apple moved notifications to the bottom of the display primarily for two reasons: ergonomics and personalization. Modern iPhones feature larger displays, making it difficult to reach notifications at the top of the screen with one hand. Placing incoming alerts at the bottom ensures they are within easy reach of your thumb. Additionally, the redesign prevents notifications from obscuring customized Lock Screen elements, such as depth-effect wallpapers, custom fonts, and lock screen widgets.

How Notifications Function at the Bottom

When alerts arrive, they roll in from the bottom of the display. Depending on your interactions, you can manage how much screen space they occupy:

  • Expanding Alerts: Swiping up from the bottom of the Lock Screen reveals older notifications stored in the Notification Center.
  • Collapsing Alerts: Pinching inwards or swiping down on the notifications collapses them to take up less visual space.
  • Tapping Alerts: Tapping an individual notification opens the corresponding app, while tapping an app group expands it.

The Three Notification Display Styles

Apple allows users to choose how notifications gather at the bottom of the Lock Screen. You can select one of three viewing options:

  1. Count: Replaces notification banners entirely with a simple text line at the bottom indicating the number of notifications (for example, "3 Notifications"). Tapping the count expands the list. This provides the cleanest, least cluttered view.
  2. Stack: The default iOS 16 setting. Incoming notifications group into an overlapping pile at the bottom of the screen. You can swipe up on the stack to browse individual alerts.
  3. List: Displays notifications individually in a traditional scrollable list starting from the lower half of the screen. While it mimics the classic iOS notification style, the list still originates from the bottom rather than the top.

How to Change Lock Screen Notification Settings

You can adjust the bottom notification format at any time through the iPhone settings:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Under the Display As section at the top, select Count, Stack, or List.

The selected layout takes effect immediately on your Lock Screen without requiring a device restart.
