What Is Apple Pay Later in iOS 16 Wallet?

Apple Pay Later is Apple's integrated "buy now, pay later" (BNPL) financing service, allowing users to split purchases into four equal installments over six weeks with zero interest and no fees. Fully integrated into the iOS 16 Apple Wallet app, the feature provides a seamless way to apply for loans, make purchases wherever Apple Pay is accepted, and track repayment schedules directly from an iPhone without needing third-party financial applications.

Understanding Apple Pay Later

Apple Pay Later enables eligible U.S. users to finance purchases ranging from $50 to $1,000. The total cost is divided into four equal payments: the first payment is due at the time of purchase, followed by three additional payments spaced two weeks apart over the subsequent six weeks.

The service operates on the Mastercard network and is backed by Apple Financing LLC, Apple’s own lending subsidiary. A soft credit check is performed during the application process to ensure financial health without impacting the user's credit score.

Integration with the iOS 16 Wallet App

Apple built the entire lifecycle of the loan directly into the native iOS 16 Wallet app to eliminate the friction typically associated with installment plans:

  • In-App Application: Users can apply for an Apple Pay Later loan directly within Apple Wallet. Once approved, the available credit amount is linked directly to the user's Apple ID and appears alongside their standard payment cards.
  • Frictionless Checkout: During any standard Apple Pay checkout online or in apps, Apple Pay Later appears as a direct payment option. Users can view the exact payment schedule and select it with a double-click and Face ID or Touch ID authentication.
  • Unified Loan Tracking: The Wallet app features a dedicated dashboard showing all active and completed loans. Users can view total amounts owed, upcoming payment due dates, and past transaction histories in a centralized view.
  • Calendar Integration: Upcoming due dates automatically sync with native iOS features, and the Wallet app sends timely notifications ahead of scheduled deductions to help prevent missed payments.
  • Debit-Only Repayments: To discourage taking on additional debt, Apple Pay Later requires repayments to be linked to a debit card rather than a credit card. Payments are automatically processed through the Wallet app, though manual early payments can also be made at any time with no prepayment penalties.
