What Happened to Live Wallpapers in iOS 16?

Upgrading your iPhone to iOS 16 fundamentally changes how the Lock Screen works, which directly impacts existing live wallpapers. When you update from an older version of iOS, interactive live wallpapers are permanently converted into static images. This article explains what happens to your previous animated backgrounds, why Apple removed the feature, and what options you have going forward.

Live Wallpapers Become Static Images

If you had a dynamic stock wallpaper or a custom Live Photo set as your Lock Screen before updating, the image itself will remain after the update. However, it will no longer animate. Pressing and holding on the display will no longer trigger the motion effect, turning your previously animated background into a permanent still photo.

Why Apple Removed the Animation Feature

The removal of interactive live wallpapers is a direct result of Apple's redesigned Lock Screen interface. In iOS 15 and earlier, pressing down on the Lock Screen activated the wallpaper's animation via 3D Touch or Haptic Touch. In iOS 16, Apple reassigned that long-press gesture to open the new Lock Screen customization gallery, where users switch layouts, customize fonts, and add widgets. Because the gesture was repurposed for system navigation, the press-to-animate functionality was eliminated entirely.

Legacy Stock Wallpapers Are Removed

Alongside custom Live Photos losing their motion, Apple completely removed its catalog of legacy live wallpapers in iOS 16. The iconic ink blooms, smoke effects, and moving bubbles from older iOS versions are absent from the wallpaper selector. If you switch away from your existing legacy wallpaper, you will not be able to select it again from the default options.

What Replaces Live Wallpapers in iOS 16

While manual, touch-activated animations are gone, iOS 16 introduces automated dynamic options in their place. Users can select dynamic backgrounds such as Astronomy (which shows real-time planetary data) and Weather (which reflects current local atmospheric conditions with real-time animations). Additionally, you can enable Photo Shuffle to automatically cycle through still photos throughout the day, or use Depth Effect to place the subject of a photo partially in front of the Lock Screen clock.
