Track Flights and Packages with Live Text in iOS 16

Apple expanded its Live Text feature in iOS 16 to include interactive Quick Actions, allowing the operating system to automatically recognize contextual data such as flight numbers and package tracking codes directly within photos, screenshots, and the Camera viewfinder. By leveraging machine learning on devices powered by the A12 Bionic chip or newer, iOS 16 transforms static text into actionable shortcuts. With a single tap, users can view real-time flight statuses or open official carrier delivery updates without manually copying and pasting long identification numbers into web browsers.

How to Track Flights Using Live Text

iOS 16 recognizes standard airline codes and flight numbers (such as "UA 1234" or "DL 567") across the Photos app, Safari, Quick Look, and the native Camera app.

  1. Locate the Flight Information: Open a photo, screenshot, or document containing the airline name and flight number, or point your device’s Camera directly at the printed boarding pass or itinerary.
  2. Activate Live Text: Tap the Live Text icon (the small square with three lines) in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  3. Select the Quick Action: iOS will automatically underline the flight number or generate a dedicated Quick Action button in the lower-left corner labeled with an airplane icon.
  4. Preview Flight Status: Tap the underlined flight number or the Quick Action button, then select Preview Flight. An interactive modal will appear showing the flight route, scheduled departure and arrival times, baggage claim details, gate numbers, and terminal information.

How to Track Packages Using Live Text

Live Text detects standard tracking formats used by major courier services, including USPS, FedEx, UPS, and DHL.

  1. Find the Tracking Number: Position a shipping receipt, physical label, or screenshot containing the tracking barcode or numeric code in view.
  2. Engage Live Text: In the Camera app or inside the Photos app, tap the Live Text icon in the bottom-right corner to process the image.
  3. Tap Track Shipment: Tap the highlighted tracking number or select the Quick Action button in the lower-left corner that appears with a package icon.
  4. View Tracking Details: Tap Track Shipment. iOS will launch Safari and route directly to the carrier's official tracking webpage with the shipment's current status and estimated delivery date.

Requirements and Best Practices

  • Hardware Compatibility: Live Text Quick Actions require an iPhone with an A12 Bionic chip or later (iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and newer models).
  • Clear Framing: Ensure the camera has adequate lighting and that the complete alphanumeric sequence is legible without glare or smudges.
  • Text Selection Alternative: If the automated Quick Action button does not immediately populate, press and hold directly on the tracking or flight text until the standard contextual menu appears, then tap the right-facing arrow to reveal "Track Shipment" or "Preview Flight."
