Switch Safari Tab Groups Using Focus Filters in iOS 16

Apple's iOS 16 introduced Focus filters, a system feature that alters how specific apps behave depending on your active Focus mode. This article explains how Focus filters link specific Safari Tab Groups to designated Focus profiles—such as Work, Personal, or Study—enabling your device to automatically switch your active browser tabs to reduce distractions and keep your browsing organized.

How Safari Focus Filters Work

Focus filters bridge the gap between iOS Focus modes and individual app environments. In Safari, this integration allows you to tie a pre-existing Tab Group directly to a Focus state. When that Focus mode activates—either manually, by schedule, or via automation—Safari dynamically filters out irrelevant tabs and opens the designated Tab Group by default.

Prerequisites

Before configuring a Focus filter, you must first create the Tab Groups you wish to use:

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Tap the Tabs icon (two overlapping squares) in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Tap the center bar indicating your open tabs and select New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group from [X] Tabs.
  4. Name the group (for example, "Work" or "Research") and tap Save.

Setting Up a Focus Filter for Safari

Once your Tab Groups are set up, configure the Focus filter through your device settings:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone running iOS 16 or later.
  2. Tap Focus, then select the specific Focus mode you want to configure (such as Work).
  3. Scroll down to the Focus Filters section and tap Add Filter.
  4. Under the App Filters section, select Safari.
  5. Tap Choose next to the Tab Group field.
  6. Select the Tab Group you want active during this Focus mode.
  7. Tap Add in the top-right corner to save your settings.

What Happens When Focus Is Active

Whenever the designated Focus mode is enabled, opening Safari will immediately present the selected Tab Group. Any tabs outside of that group are temporarily hidden from the main view to keep you focused on relevant tasks.

If you need to access other tabs while the filter is active, you can still tap the Tab Group picker at the bottom of the screen to view non-filtered tabs, or turn off the filter temporarily via the banner displayed inside Safari's tab overview. When the Focus mode turns off, Safari reverts to your standard browsing view.
