Switch Between Voice Dictation and Typing in iOS 16

Apple’s iOS 16 introduced a completely revamped Dictation experience that keeps the on-screen keyboard active while you speak. This update eliminates the need to pause or toggle modes manually, allowing you to fluidly speak, tap keys, select text, and move your cursor within the same session. This guide explains how to enable the feature and use it seamlessly on your iPhone.

Ensure Dictation Is Enabled

Before using the feature, verify that Dictation is turned on in your device settings:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then select Keyboard.
  3. Scroll down and toggle on Enable Dictation.

How to Switch Between Dictation and Typing

  1. Open Any Text Field: Launch an app that supports text entry, such as Messages, Notes, or Mail, and tap the text field to bring up the keyboard.
  2. Start Dictating: Tap the Microphone icon located in the bottom-right corner of the keyboard.
  3. Notice the Active Keyboard: Unlike earlier iOS versions where the keyboard disappeared, the keyboard remains fully visible while the microphone icon pulses.
  4. Type Without Stopping Dictation: Begin typing with your fingers at any point while speaking. Dictation stays active in the background, allowing you to alternate between speaking a sentence and manually typing a word or number.
  5. Edit Text in Real Time: Use your finger to place the cursor, highlight words, or delete characters using the Backspace key. You can select a misspelled word and immediately speak the replacement to correct it.
  6. End the Session: Once you have finished inputting your text, tap the Microphone icon again or simply tap outside the keyboard area to stop dictation.
