Siri Workout Controls in Apple Fitness iOS 16

In iOS 16, Apple expanded Siri's voice capabilities to seamlessly interact with the Fitness app, enabling hands-free workout tracking and controls directly from an iPhone or Apple Watch. Users can launch specific workout routines, pause and resume sessions, mark segments, and end activities entirely through voice commands. This integration improves accessibility and convenience, allowing users to manage their fitness metrics without interrupting their movement or needing to tap a screen.

Starting and Launching Workouts

Siri can initiate standard and custom workouts directly through the Fitness app. By issuing commands such as "Hey Siri, start an outdoor run" or "Hey Siri, begin a 30-minute HIIT workout," the assistant automatically opens the Fitness tracker and begins the countdown. If a user has pre-configured custom workout parameters—such as target heart rate zones or distance goals introduced in the iOS 16 update cycle—Siri can launch those specific sessions upon request.

In-Session Workout Controls

During an active session, Siri handles operational controls to keep hands-free operation consistent:

  • Pausing and Resuming: Saying "Hey Siri, pause workout" halts tracking immediately, while "Hey Siri, resume workout" restarts data capture.
  • Marking Segments: For track workouts or interval training, users can say "Hey Siri, mark a segment" or "Hey Siri, record a lap" to split metrics without physical interaction.
  • Ending Sessions: Stating "Hey Siri, end workout" finishes the session, triggers the summary screen, and saves the data to the Fitness and Health apps.

Standalone iPhone Fitness App Support

With iOS 16, the Apple Fitness app became available to iPhone users even if they do not own an Apple Watch. Siri bridges this gap by utilizing the iPhone’s built-in motion sensors. Users wearing AirPods or other compatible headphones can issue voice commands to track daily movement, estimate active calories burned, and log activities directly to their iPhone without touching the device.

On-Device Processing and Offline Performance

Siri takes advantage of on-device speech processing for fitness commands on devices equipped with the A12 Bionic chip or later. Because these commands are processed locally rather than routed through external servers, workout controls execute nearly instantaneously and continue to function in areas without cellular reception or Wi-Fi, such as remote running trails or basement gyms.
