Search Photos by Person and Location in iOS 16

The Photos app in iOS 16 uses advanced on-device machine learning to index visual content, facial features, and geographic metadata, allowing users to execute precise multi-parameter searches. By combining facial recognition profiles with geolocation tags, the app lets you narrow down thousands of images to find specific people in exact locations. This guide explains how this indexing functions and how to apply these search filters directly on your iPhone.

How the Indexing System Works

Apple processes all photo analysis locally on your device via the Neural Engine to protect user privacy. The indexing relies on two primary data streams:

  1. Computer Vision and Facial Recognition: The Photos app scans your library for human faces, groups similar faces together, and builds local recognition profiles. When you assign a name to a face in the "People" album, iOS associates that contact with every identified instance of that face.
  2. Geotagging and Reverse Geocoding: When a photo is taken with Location Services enabled, the camera embeds GPS coordinates into the image’s EXIF metadata. iOS 16 cross-references these coordinates with mapping data to index images by country, city, neighborhood, and even specific points of interest or business names.

Filtering by a Specific Person

To search for a person:

  1. Open the Photos app and tap the Search tab in the bottom right corner.
  2. Type the name of the person as saved in your Contacts or People album.
  3. Tap the matching result under the People category.

Selecting the generated search token isolates all photos containing that individual, removing any unrelated media from the results grid.

Filtering by Location

To filter your library by a place:

  1. Tap the search bar in the Search tab.
  2. Type the name of a city, state, country, or specific landmark (e.g., "Golden Gate Bridge" or "Austin").
  3. Select the appropriate location token from the auto-suggested results list.

The app will display all photos taken within the geographic boundaries of that tagged area.

Combining Filters: People and Locations Together

The search engine in iOS 16 supports compound queries using interactive search tokens. To view photos of a specific person at a specific place:

  1. Go to the Search tab.
  2. Search for the person's name and select their profile token.
  3. Keep the search bar active, type the desired location, and select the location token from the suggestions.
  4. Both tokens will sit in the search bar simultaneously, creating an "AND" logic filter that only displays images containing both the specified person and the matching GPS coordinates.

You can further refine these queries by typing additional parameters, such as years, months, or scene descriptors (like "beach" or "restaurant"), to narrow down extensive libraries instantly.
