Managing TV Streaming Accessories in iOS 16 Home

The iOS 16 Home app introduces a redesigned interface that streamlines how users monitor, control, and stream content across smart TVs and connected streaming players. Through consolidated device categories, enhanced Control Center widgets, and robust network access rules, iOS 16 simplifies the management of AirPlay 2-compatible televisions, Apple TVs, and third-party HomeKit-enabled streaming hardware.

Unified Device Categorization and Tile Controls

In iOS 16, the Home app organizes connected hardware into distinct categories at the top of the main tab, placing all streaming equipment under the Speakers & TVs category.

  • Status Overviews: Tapping the Speakers & TVs category filters the view to show only media devices, displaying their current power states, active inputs, and currently playing media.
  • Interactive Tiles: Each TV accessory features an interactive tile. Tapping the left icon toggles power on or off, while tapping the rest of the tile opens the accessory card for granular controls, including input selection and direct access to the virtual Apple TV Remote.

Input and Playback Management

HomeKit-enabled TVs (such as those running webOS, Tizen, or Google TV) expose their physical and digital inputs directly to the Home app interface.

Within the device settings card, users can:

  • Switch Sources: Change inputs between HDMI ports, cable tuners, and native streaming applications configured as discrete inputs.
  • Rename Inputs: Assign custom labels to ports (e.g., changing "HDMI 1" to "PlayStation 5") to simplify identification across all synced Apple devices.
  • Manage Visibility: Hide unused inputs so they do not clutter the device card.

Streaming and AirPlay Access Permissions

Streaming security and local network access are managed directly within the Home app's global settings rather than on the individual accessories.

To configure who can stream to TV accessories:

  1. Tap the More (...) button in the top-right corner of the Home tab and select Home Settings.
  2. Select Speakers & TV.
  3. Choose the preferred access level:
    • Everyone: Allows anyone within local range to stream to the devices.
    • Anyone on the Same Network: Limits streaming access to guests connected to the local Wi-Fi network.
    • Only People Sharing This Home: Restricts playback exclusively to invited members of the Home app.
  4. Optionally, toggle Require Password to enforce an authentication pin before any device can cast media.

Integration with Scenes and Automations

iOS 16 allows TV accessories to function as triggers or actions within HomeKit automations:

  • Scene Integration: Include TVs in custom scenes (such as "Movie Night"), allowing the system to dim smart lights, lower window blinds, turn on the TV, and switch to a specified input simultaneously.
  • Location-Based Triggers: Automatically turn off all streaming devices and televisions when the last resident leaves the house to conserve power.
