iPhone Models With iOS 16 Battery Percentage

When Apple released iOS 16, it reintroduced the battery percentage indicator directly inside the status bar icon for iPhones with a display notch, ending a five-year absence. While the feature was initially restricted to specific devices upon the launch of iOS 16.0, subsequent software releases expanded compatibility to include every Face ID-capable iPhone eligible for the operating system.

Models Supported at iOS 16.0 Launch

When iOS 16 debuted in September 2022, Apple brought the battery percentage toggle back to most notched iPhones. The devices supported on day one were:

  • iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone X

At initial release, Apple excluded four specific models: the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 mini, and iPhone 13 mini. The exclusion was attributed to space constraints on smaller screens and lower pixel densities on non-OLED displays.

Models Added in the iOS 16.1 Update

Following user feedback, Apple released iOS 16.1 in October 2022, which extended status bar battery percentage support to the remaining excluded devices:

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 13 mini

Additionally, the iPhone 14 Plus, which launched slightly after the initial iOS 16 release, also supported the feature out of the box.

Devices With Prior Native Support

iPhones with a physical Home button—such as the iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) and iPhone 8—already supported the numeric battery percentage in the status bar prior to iOS 16, as their display design did not feature a notch to restrict status bar space.

How to Enable the Battery Percentage

To turn on the battery percentage on any supported device running iOS 16.1 or later:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Toggle on Battery Percentage.

Once activated, the numeric percentage appears directly inside the battery icon in the top-right corner of the status bar.
