iOS 16 Messages Undo Send Time Limit

Apple's iOS 16 update introduced the ability to retract recently sent texts in the Messages app. This article covers the exact time limit for using the Undo Send feature, how it differs from editing a message, the step-by-step process to recall a text, and the key requirements needed for the feature to function properly.

The Time Limit for Undo Send

In iOS 16, you have 2 minutes from the moment you send an iMessage to unsend it. Once two minutes have passed, the "Undo Send" option disappears from the menu, and the message can no longer be recalled.

This is separate from the editing feature, which gives you up to 15 minutes to edit a sent message (up to five times).

How to Undo Send in Messages

To recall a message within the two-minute window:

  1. Open the Messages app and find the conversation.
  2. Touch and hold (long-press) the message bubble you want to retract.
  3. Tap Undo Send from the pop-up menu.

The message will disappear with a bursting animation. A brief notification reading "You unsent a message" will remain in the thread for both you and the recipient.

Important Requirements and Limitations

  • iMessage Only: Undo Send only works with blue-bubble iMessages sent between Apple devices. It does not work with standard SMS/MMS text messages (green bubbles).
  • Software Version: The feature works seamlessly if the recipient is running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, or watchOS 9 and later. If the recipient is running an older operating system, the original message will not be removed from their screen.
  • Notification Preview: If the recipient looks at their device immediately, they may still see the message on their lock screen or in a notification banner before you have the chance to recall it.
