iOS 16 Mail Undo Send Time Limit Explained
Apple introduced the Undo Send feature in the iOS 16 Mail app, giving users a brief grace period to cancel an outgoing email before it reaches the recipient. By default, users have a 10-second window to retrieve an email, but this duration can be customized up to a maximum of 30 seconds. This guide details the available time frames, how the feature operates, and how to adjust the delay settings on your iPhone.
Available Time Limits
In iOS 16, the Undo Send feature offers four configurable duration options:
- Off: Disables the feature entirely; emails send immediately upon tapping the send button.
- 10 Seconds: The default setting upon updating to or installing iOS 16.
- 20 Seconds: An extended buffer for second-guessing or checking attachments.
- 30 Seconds: The maximum allowable delay provided by Apple.
How Undo Send Operates
The Undo Send feature does not recall an email that has already reached the recipient’s mail server. Instead, iOS holds the message in an outgoing queue on your device for the duration of the chosen time window. If you do not cancel the action before the timer expires, the email is formally transmitted.
Immediately after tapping the send arrow, an Undo Send prompt appears at the very bottom of your inbox screen. Tapping it halts the transmission and reopens the message in draft form, allowing you to edit text, change recipients, add attachments, or delete the draft completely.
How to Change the Undo Send Delay
You can customize the time window to better fit your workflow by following these steps:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone running iOS 16 or later.
- Scroll down and select Mail.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Mail settings menu to locate the Sending section.
- Tap Undo Send Delay.
- Select your preferred timeframe: Off, 10 Seconds, 20 Seconds, or 30 Seconds.
Once selected, the new time limit takes effect immediately for all subsequent emails sent from the native Mail app.
