iOS 16 Home Water Leak and Smoke Sensor Alerts

In iOS 16, Apple's redesigned Home app delivers critical safety notifications for water leak and smoke sensors using low-latency push services integrated directly into the iOS notification system. When a HomeKit-compatible sensor detects moisture or smoke, it transmits an instantaneous state change to an active Home hub, which relays the event through Apple Push Notification service (APNs) to your connected Apple devices. Because these accessories protect life and property, iOS 16 treats their alerts with heightened priority, allowing them to bypass system-level silencers such as Focus modes and mute switches.

The Role of the Home Hub

To receive push notifications outside your local Wi-Fi network, iOS 16 requires a Home hub, such as an Apple TV (4th generation or later) or a HomePod. When a smoke detector or water leak sensor triggers, it sends a signal over its native protocol—typically Thread, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth—to the Home hub. The hub processes the telemetry instantly and sends a push payload to iCloud, which then delivers the alert across your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

Critical Alerts and Time-Sensitive Delivery

Safety accessories like smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as select water leak detectors, utilize Apple’s Critical Alerts framework. Unlike standard app notifications, Critical Alerts:

  • Play an audible alarm even if your iPhone is set to Silent or Do Not Disturb.
  • Break through scheduled Focus modes (such as Sleep or Work).
  • Display prominently on the Lock Screen until manually acknowledged.

If a sensor does not support full Critical Alerts, iOS 16 categorizes it as a Time-Sensitive Notification, ensuring it appears on the Lock Screen immediately rather than being lumped into a Scheduled Summary.

Configuring Alerts in the Home App

Alert delivery can be tailored per sensor within the iOS 16 Home interface:

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Tap the Climate or Security category at the top of the screen, or navigate to the room where the sensor is assigned.
  3. Tap the sensor tile to open its controls, then tap the Gear icon in the bottom-right corner.
  4. Select Status and Notifications.
  5. Toggle on Allow Notifications on This iPhone.
  6. Customize alert triggers under Time (e.g., Any time, During the day, At night) and People (e.g., When I am home, When nobody is home).

Required iOS System Settings

For push notifications to function reliably, your iPhone's system settings must grant appropriate permissions:

  • Navigate to Settings > Notifications > Home.
  • Ensure Allow Notifications is enabled.
  • Toggle on Critical Alerts (if supported by your hardware) and Time-Sensitive Notifications.
  • Set the alert style to Banners or Alerts and verify that Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners are all checked to guarantee immediate visibility during an incident.
