iOS 16 Home App Climate and Temperature Groups
In iOS 16, Apple redesigned the Home app to present smart home accessories more intuitively, replacing sprawling lists of individual tiles with centralized category buttons and aggregated sensor data. Rather than giving every temperature and humidity monitor its own large tile on the main dashboard, the app groups these readings into a dedicated Climate category, status bars, and unified room summaries. This article explains how the iOS 16 Home app organizes climate sensors, how it displays aggregated data, and how to access individual sensor readings.
The Top-Level Climate Category
At the top of the main Home tab, iOS 16 introduces a persistent row of category buttons: Climate, Lights, Security, Speakers, and Water. The Climate button functions as a dynamic status pill. When viewed on the dashboard, it immediately shows a summary of the home's ambient conditions, such as the current temperature range (for example, "68°–72°") and active heating or cooling states. Tapping this Climate button filters the entire view, isolating all thermostats, temperature sensors, humidity gauges, fans, and air purifiers in one place.
Status Bar Summaries and Averaging
Directly below the home's name, the Home app displays a text-based status section. When multiple temperature sensors are present in a home or a specific room, the interface avoids clutter by summarizing their output into a single temperature range. If all sensors report the same temperature, a single number appears. If they differ, the app displays the lowest and highest readings.
Room-Level Sensor Grouping
Inside individual room views, temperature and humidity sensors do not occupy full-sized interactive tiles by default. Instead, they are aggregated into the room's header status. This design keeps the primary control interface clean for controllable accessories like smart plugs, lights, and thermostats, while keeping environmental data visible at a glance.
Accessing Individual Sensors
To view the data from specific sensors within a group, tap the summarized climate status in either the main dashboard or the room view:
- Tap the Climate category button at the top of the screen or the climate status text in a specific room.
- An accessory card or categorized view will open, displaying the full list of sensors.
- Tap on a specific sensor group (such as "Temperature") to open a detailed sheet that lists every individual sensor, its assigned room, and its precise current reading.
- From this detailed view, tap the gear icon to access settings for individual sensors, where you can rename the device, change its status inclusion, or decouple it from the summarized views.
