iOS 16 Home App Accessory Categories Explained

The redesigned Home app in iOS 16 introduces a top-level category system that simplifies how users monitor and control smart home accessories. Instead of navigating through multiple screens and tabs, the interface organizes devices into dedicated categories at the top of the main Home tab. This article explains how this categorization works, the specific accessory groups available, and how the feature streamlines everyday device management.

The Top Navigation Bar

At the top of the Home tab, directly beneath the home's name, iOS 16 features a horizontal row of category buttons. These buttons act as smart filters that instantly condense your entire setup into specific domains. The available categories dynamically appear based on the types of devices added to your home:

  • Climate: Encompasses thermostats, temperature and humidity sensors, fans, air conditioners, and air purifiers.
  • Lights: Collects all smart bulbs, light strips, dimmers, and smart switches labeled as lights.
  • Security: Groups smart locks, alarm systems, garage doors, contact sensors, and motion sensors.
  • Speakers & TV: Organizes HomePods, AirPlay-compatible smart TVs, and connected streaming boxes.
  • Water: Displays smart irrigation systems, sprinkler controllers, and smart faucets.

Dedicated Category Views

Tapping any category button changes the view from the full home layout to a focused dashboard dedicated solely to that accessory type:

  1. Contextual Controls: The top of each category page displays overall status information and global controls (such as turning off all lights in the house with a single tap).
  2. Room-by-Room Breakdown: Accessories within that category are automatically grouped by the room they are assigned to, allowing you to quickly locate and adjust specific devices without scrolling past unrelated hardware.
  3. Multi-Camera Feeds: For security, tapping the Security category provides a consolidated view of camera streams, sensor alerts, and lock states in one centralized place.

Dynamic Status and Accessory Tiles

Alongside category filters, iOS 16 pairs device organization with redesigned tiles and status summaries. The status section at the top of the screen highlights active devices (such as "3 Lights On" or "Front Door Unlocked") which link directly to the corresponding category.

Within each category, accessory tiles are color-coded and visually differentiated: tapping the icon immediately toggles the power state, while tapping the rest of the tile opens detailed controls, such as brightness sliders, color palettes, or thermostat dials.
