iOS 16 Focus Filters: Dark Mode & Low Power Mode
Focus filters in iOS 16 allow users to customize how their devices behave when a specific Focus mode is active. Beyond filtering app notifications and content, these system-level filters can automatically trigger Dark Mode to reduce eye strain or engage Low Power Mode to conserve battery life based on your current activity or schedule. Once the Focus ends, your device seamlessly reverts to its previous state.
How System Focus Filters Work
Focus filters bridge the gap between context-aware automation and core iOS settings. Previously, switching to Dark Mode or Low Power Mode automatically required creating custom Shortcuts automations. In iOS 16, Apple integrated these options directly into the Focus setup menu under the "System Filters" section, enabling instant toggles linked directly to Focus triggers like time, location, or app usage.
Applying Dark Mode to a Focus
The Dark Mode filter forces iOS into either light or dark appearance whenever the selected Focus is active.
- Practical Use: You can link Dark Mode to a "Reading" Focus or a "Night" Focus so the display switches to a darker, less intrusive interface without affecting your overall system schedule.
- How to configure:
- Open Settings and tap Focus.
- Select an existing Focus profile (or tap the + icon to create a new one).
- Scroll down to the Focus Filters section and tap Add Filter.
- Under System Filters, select Dark Mode.
- Choose whether the filter turns Dark Mode On or Off, then tap Add.
Applying Low Power Mode to a Focus
The Low Power Mode filter automatically reduces background activity, pauses iCloud syncing, and optimizes performance to preserve battery life while a Focus is engaged.
- Practical Use: This is useful for a "Travel," "Work Commute," or "Outdoor Workout" Focus, where access to a charger is limited and extending battery longevity is critical.
- How to configure:
- Open Settings and tap Focus.
- Choose the relevant Focus profile.
- Scroll down to Focus Filters and tap Add Filter.
- Under System Filters, select Low Power Mode.
- Ensure the toggle is set to On, then tap Add.
Reversion Behavior
When you manually turn off the Focus or its schedule ends, iOS automatically restores your prior settings. If your iPhone was in Light Mode before activating a Focus with a Dark Mode filter, it will immediately return to Light Mode. Similarly, Low Power Mode will turn off upon exiting the Focus, provided your battery level is above 20%.
