iOS 16 Control Center Smart Lock Status Indicators

Apple’s iOS 16 integrates HomeKit smart lock controls directly into the Control Center, giving users an immediate, glanceable overview of their home's security. Through a combination of dedicated accessory tiles, dynamic color changes, and top-level summary banners, users can verify whether their doors are secured and control their smart locks without opening the Home app.

The Home Summary Row

At the top of the Control Center’s Home section sits a dynamic status row that aggregates the status of critical devices. If any connected smart lock is unlocked, a high-priority status badge appears here displaying text such as "1 Lock Unlocked" or the specific name of the door. Tapping this summary badge immediately filters the view to show only the locks requiring attention.

Tile Iconography and Text

Individual smart locks appear as modular rectangular tiles inside Control Center. The visual status of the lock is communicated through specific iconography and status text:

  • Locked: Displays a closed padlock icon accompanied by the subtext "Locked" below the accessory name.
  • Unlocked: Displays an open padlock icon with the subtext "Unlocked."
  • In-Transition: When the lock motor is running, the icon animates and displays "Locking…" or "Unlocking…" until the operation completes.

Color-Coded Indicators

iOS 16 uses visual hierarchy and color coding to signal potential security issues. When a smart lock is secured, the tile typically remains neutral or dim to indicate normal, secure conditions. When a lock is open, the tile illuminates with an amber or yellow accent color. This high-contrast highlight ensures that an unsecured door stands out immediately when pulling down Control Center.

Error and Offline States

If a smart lock encounters an issue, the Control Center tile updates its status text and icon accordingly:

  • Jammed: The tile displays an alert icon with the label "Jammed," signaling that the deadbolt failed to fully extend or retract.
  • No Response: If the device loses Wi-Fi, Thread, or Bluetooth connectivity to the Home Hub, the tile dims and displays "No Response."
  • Low Battery: A small battery icon appears within the status line if the lock's hardware battery drops below critical thresholds.

Interaction Modes

Users can interact with the lock indicator in two ways. Tapping the padlock icon directly initiates an instant lock or unlock command. Tapping the rest of the tile opens an expanded view featuring a vertical sliding toggle, detailed state feedback, and direct access to the lock’s accessory settings.
