iOS 16.5: Pride Wallpaper and Apple News Sports Tab

Apple released iOS 16.5 in May 2023, introducing several targeted refinements headlined by the 2023 Pride Celebration lock screen wallpaper and a dedicated Sports tab within the Apple News app. This update aimed to enhance personalization while streamlining how users follow their favorite athletic teams and leagues.

The Pride Celebration wallpaper was designed to honor the LGBTQ+ community and coincided with Apple’s 2023 Pride Edition Sport Band. Unlike static backgrounds, this dynamic wallpaper features vibrant, overlapping geometric shapes that move responsively as users unlock their iPhone, wake the screen, or swipe between screens. Apple integrated the design directly into the Lock Screen gallery under a dedicated Pride section, allowing users to customize the clock font and widgets while retaining the fluid, colorful aesthetic.

Alongside the visual update, iOS 16.5 overhauled navigation in Apple News by adding a dedicated Sports tab to the bottom navigation bar. Previously nested within the Today feed, sports coverage received a central, permanent location. The tab offers direct access to stories, scores, schedules, and standings for predefined favorite teams and leagues.

The update also enhanced sports cards, enabling users to tap directly into specific game pages for real-time coverage and pre-game previews. By elevating sports content to the primary navigation interface, iOS 16.5 simplified the user experience for sports fans seeking immediate scores and customized reporting without digging through general news feeds.
