iOS 16.1 Matter Support and Clean Energy Charging

The release of iOS 16.1 marked a significant milestone for Apple users by expanding smart home interoperability and introducing environmentally conscious software tools. This update formally integrated the new Matter connectivity standard into the Apple Home ecosystem, allowing seamless operation across diverse smart device brands, while also debuting Clean Energy Charging to help users minimize their carbon footprint during routine battery top-ups.

Integrating the Matter Smart Home Standard

With iOS 16.1, Apple activated support for Matter, a unified, open-source connectivity protocol developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) alongside industry leaders such as Google, Amazon, and Samsung.

Before this update, smart accessories required specific HomeKit certification to function natively within the Apple Home app. iOS 16.1 removed this barrier by embedding the Matter framework directly into the operating system. Key aspects of this integration include:

  • Cross-Platform Interoperability: Certified Matter accessories—such as lights, switches, thermostats, and sensors—can connect seamlessly to the Apple Home app and Siri, even if they were originally designed for another ecosystem.
  • Streamlined Setup: Users can pair Matter devices using the standard Apple setup process, scanning a Matter QR code or entering a setup code directly within the Home app.
  • Home Hub Coordination: To control Matter accessories remotely and automate them, iOS 16.1 relied on an updated Home architecture requiring an Apple TV or HomePod to serve as a Matter controller and Thread border router.

Launching Clean Energy Charging

Alongside Matter, iOS 16.1 launched Clean Energy Charging for users in the United States. This feature works alongside Optimized Battery Charging to intelligently schedule charging periods based on the local power grid's environmental impact.

The system functions through the following mechanisms:

  • Grid Forecasting: When an iPhone is connected to power, iOS 16.1 references local carbon emission forecasts provided by energy authorities. It identifies when the local electrical grid is using cleaner, renewable sources such as wind or solar, versus when it relies heavily on fossil fuels.
  • Delayed Charging: If the grid is currently relying on higher-emission energy sources, the iPhone pauses charging at 80% and resumes full charging once cleaner energy becomes available or prior to the user's anticipated unplugging time.
  • Predictive Habits: The feature adapts to a user’s daily habits. It only activates in locations where the user spends significant time, such as home or work, avoiding delays when charging during travel or irregular schedules.
  • User Control: Enabled by default in iOS 16.1, the feature can be toggled under Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Users can also override a delayed charge directly from the Lock Screen if immediate power is needed.
