iCloud Backup Over Cellular in iOS 16 Explained

With the release of iOS 16, Apple expanded iCloud Backup capabilities to work over standard cellular data connections, removing the previous restriction that required either a Wi-Fi or 5G network. This update allows iPhone users to back up their personal data, app settings, and media using 4G LTE connections, providing greater flexibility for users who lack consistent broadband Wi-Fi access or live in areas without 5G coverage.

Expanding Beyond 5G

In iOS 15, Apple introduced the ability to create iCloud backups over cellular networks, but that feature was strictly limited to 5G connections and required specific carrier support. Recognizing that many users still rely on 4G LTE networks or travel through regions where 5G is unavailable, Apple removed this network-type restriction in iOS 16. The operating system treats active 4G LTE connections as viable channels for running automatic or manual iCloud backups.

How to Enable Cellular Backups

To back up an iPhone using cellular data on iOS 16 or later:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your Apple Account name at the top of the screen.
  3. Select iCloud, then tap iCloud Backup.
  4. Toggle on the switch labeled Back Up Over Cellular.

Once enabled, your iPhone can perform scheduled, automatic backups when connected to power, locked, and connected to cellular data, or you can manually trigger a backup by tapping Back Up Now while disconnected from Wi-Fi.

Data Consumption and Carrier Limits

While iOS 16 allows backups over non-5G cellular connections, carrier restrictions and plan allowances still apply. An iCloud backup can range from a few hundred megabytes to tens of gigabytes, depending on the amount of device data.

Carriers may throttle speeds, restrict large background uploads, or charge overage fees if you exceed your data limit. For this reason, iOS 16 will alert you if a backup requires significant data, and users on metered or capped cellular plans should monitor their usage closely when enabling this feature.
