How Wallet Integrates with Safari in iOS 16

In iOS 16, Apple enhanced the integration between the Wallet app and Safari, making the online checkout process faster, more secure, and comprehensive. This integration allows users to complete purchases using Apple Pay with biometric authentication, securely autofill virtual card details on non-Apple Pay websites, monitor detailed order tracking directly inside Wallet, and manage financing options during checkout without leaving the browser.

Seamless Apple Pay Authentication

When shopping on websites supporting Apple Pay in Safari, the Wallet app acts as the secure payment gateway. Instead of manually entering billing details, users tap the Apple Pay button, which calls data directly from the Wallet app. The system presents a native payment sheet containing pre-stored shipping addresses, contact details, and payment cards. Authentication is finalized using Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode, ensuring the merchant never receives the customer's actual credit or debit card numbers.

Virtual Card Numbers for Non-Apple Pay Sites

For merchants that do not accept Apple Pay, iOS 16 bridges the gap between Safari Autofill and Wallet. Safari can automatically pull credit cards stored in the Wallet app and generate a virtual card number (with a dynamic security code) for participating card issuers. This prevents the merchant from storing the physical card's primary account number, shielding the user from data breaches while still offering the speed of Safari Autofill.

Integrated Apple Pay Order Tracking

iOS 16 introduced native order tracking within the Wallet app for purchases made via Safari. Participating merchants deliver detailed receipts, shipping updates, and tracking numbers directly to Apple Wallet immediately after an Apple Pay transaction completes. Users can track packages, view estimated delivery dates, and contact merchant support directly from the Wallet app without relying on third-party tracking apps or hunting through confirmation emails.

Apple Pay Later Integration

During checkout in Safari, users have the option to use Apple Pay Later (available through the Wallet app in supported regions). This feature allows customers to split purchases into four equal payments over six weeks with zero interest and no fees. The application, management, and installment tracking for these purchases are handled natively within the Wallet interface, appearing seamlessly as a payment option inside the Safari checkout sheet.
