How to View Wallet Receipt Summaries in iOS 16

In iOS 16, Apple introduced an enhanced Order Tracking and receipt feature within Apple Pay that allows users to access itemized purchase summaries directly from their lock screen notifications. This guide explains how these detailed receipts function, how to open them from a transaction alert, and what merchants must support for them to appear.

How Detailed Receipts Open from Notifications

When you complete a purchase using Apple Pay with a participating merchant, your iPhone generates a standard transaction notification. Accessing the itemized receipt from this alert requires a few simple interactions:

  1. Tap the Notification: Tapping an Apple Pay transaction alert on your Lock Screen or Notification Center immediately launches the Wallet app directly to the relevant payment card.
  2. Expand the Summary: If the merchant provides Apple Pay Order Tracking, iOS 16 expands the transaction view to display an itemized breakdown. This includes individual items, tax, shipping costs, order status, and tracking numbers.
  3. Long-Press for a Quick Look: From the Lock Screen, you can long-press (Haptic Touch) the Wallet notification. On supported devices, this expands an interactive rich notification banner displaying the purchase total, order status, and a direct button labeled "View Order" or "Receipt." Tapping this button opens the detailed view inside the Wallet app without requiring you to manually navigate your transaction history.

Accessing Receipts Later via Apple Wallet

If you dismiss the notification, the detailed summary remains stored locally in the Wallet app:

  1. Open the Wallet app.
  2. Select the card used for the transaction.
  3. Tap the transaction under Latest Transactions.
  4. Select Order Details or Receipt to view the itemized summary and shipping updates.

Requirements for Detailed Receipts to Appear

Detailed receipt summaries do not appear for every Apple Pay transaction automatically. For an itemized receipt to display:

  • Merchant Integration: The merchant’s app or website must support the Apple Pay Order Tracking API introduced in iOS 16. If a merchant has not implemented this protocol, the notification will only display a standard transaction amount and merchant name.
  • Apple ID Syncing: The device must be signed in to an Apple ID to securely link order management and tracking tokens between the merchant and the Wallet app.
