How to Use Spelling Mode in iOS 16 Voice Control
Apple’s iOS 16 introduced Spelling Mode to Voice Control, providing an efficient way to dictate uncommon terms, names, email addresses, and complex alphanumeric strings letter by letter. This accessibility feature addresses the limitations of standard speech recognition by disabling auto-correct and predictive text parsing, ensuring every spoken character is accurately transcribed. This guide explains how to activate, use, and exit Spelling Mode to dictate non-standard terms effortlessly.
Activating Spelling Mode
To begin dictating letter-by-letter, you must first have Voice Control enabled via Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control.
Once Voice Control is active, you can enter Spelling Mode in two ways:
- Continuous Entry: Say
"Spelling Mode"to switch your entire dictation environment into character-by-character input. - Contextual Correction: If standard dictation
misinterprets a word, say
"Spell that"while the cursor is adjacent to or highlighting the incorrect word.
Dictating Characters and Uncommon Terms
In Spelling Mode, iOS 16 stops attempting to form whole words from phonetic sounds, capturing only individual characters, numbers, and symbols:
- Standard Letters: Speak letters clearly. Saying
"j-o-h-n"will outputjohninstead of searching for a phonetic word match. - The Military/Phonetic Alphabet: iOS 16 supports the
NATO phonetic alphabet for improved accuracy in noisy environments.
Saying
"Alpha Bravo Charlie"will inputabc. - Capitalization: To capitalize a specific character,
say
"Capital [letter]"(e.g.,"Capital T"producesT). For sustained capitalization, say"Caps on"to begin uppercase text and"Caps off"to return to lowercase. - Numbers and Symbols: Speak numbers naturally (e.g.,
"five","nine") or state punctuation marks directly (e.g.,"hyphen","underscore","at sign"). - Deleting Mistakes: If a character is
misinterpreted, state
"Delete that"or"Backspace"to remove the previous entry without exiting the mode.
Exiting Spelling Mode
When you finish spelling the uncommon term, you must manually return to standard speech-to-text dictation:
- Say
"Exit spelling mode"to return to standard Voice Control. - Continue speaking complete sentences as normal; the operating system will resume regular word recognition, grammar checks, and spacing automatically.
