How to Use SharePlay in iOS 16 Messages

With the release of iOS 16, Apple expanded SharePlay functionality beyond FaceTime, allowing users to watch movies, listen to music, and enjoy synchronized playback directly within the Messages app. This guide explains how to initiate a SharePlay session inside an iMessage thread, detailing the requirements and exact steps needed to stream content together while texting.

Prerequisites

Before starting, ensure that:

  • All participants are running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, or later.
  • All participants have an active subscription or access to the chosen app and content (e.g., Apple TV+, Apple Music, Disney+, or supported third-party apps).
  • iMessage is enabled on all devices.

Step-by-Step: Starting SharePlay via Messages

  1. Open a Supported App
Launch the streaming or media app containing the content you want to watch or listen to (such as the Apple TV app or Apple Music).

  2. Select the Media
Navigate to the title, episode, or song you want to stream together.

  3. Tap the Share Button
Tap the standard Share icon on the media's details page.

  4. Select SharePlay
In the share sheet, tap the SharePlay option.

  5. Choose Your Recipients
In the "To:" field, type the contact names or select the existing Messages conversation you want to share with.

  6. Send the Invitation
Tap Messages, add an optional message if desired, and hit Send.

  7. Start Playback
Tap Play or Start in the media app. When prompted, select Play for Everyone.

Joining and Controlling the Session

  • For the Recipients: A banner appears in the iMessage thread reading "Tap to join SharePlay." Tapping the prompt automatically opens the corresponding app and syncs playback.
  • Shared Controls: Any participant can play, pause, rewind, or fast-forward. The playback state updates in real time for everyone in the session.
  • Multitasking: You can switch back to the Messages thread at any time to chat; the media will continue playing in Picture-in-Picture mode or in the background.
