How to Use Live Text with Phone Numbers in iOS 16
Apple's iOS 16 enhances the Live Text feature by turning static phone numbers captured in photos into interactive elements. Using on-device machine learning, the operating system detects numerical patterns representing phone numbers in the Photos app, Camera roll, and Safari, allowing users to call, message, or save contacts directly from an image with a single tap.
How Live Text Detects Phone Numbers
When you open an image containing text in the Photos app, iOS 16 automatically analyzes the visual data. If the system detects a sequence resembling a local or international phone number, it converts that sequence into actionable text. A dedicated Live Text icon appears in the bottom-right corner of the image preview, highlighting all actionable data, including dates, addresses, and phone numbers.
Available Actions
Tapping directly on a highlighted phone number or pressing the Live Text icon brings up a contextual menu with several direct actions:
- Call: Instantly initiates a standard cellular voice call using the Phone app.
- Send Message: Opens a new conversation thread addressed to that number in the Messages app.
- FaceTime Audio or Video: Prompts a FaceTime call if the number is registered with an Apple ID.
- Add to Contacts: Allows you to create a new contact card or append the phone number to an existing contact.
- Copy: Copies the phone number to the clipboard so you can paste it into any other application.
Interacting with the Number
You can interact with detected phone numbers using two primary methods:
- Direct Tap: Simply tap the visible digits within the photo. The operating system places an underline beneath the detected number to indicate it is an interactive link, similar to a hyperlink on a webpage.
- Long Press for More Options: Touching and holding the number reveals the complete contextual pop-up menu, giving you access to secondary options like copying the text, sharing via the system Share Sheet, or initiating third-party messaging apps like WhatsApp if supported.
Accuracy and Requirements
Live Text in iOS 16 functions with both printed text (such as business cards, billboards, and flyers) and legible handwritten notes. The processing occurs entirely on-device via the Neural Engine, meaning no internet connection is required to scan or interact with phone numbers. This feature requires an iPhone equipped with the A12 Bionic chip or later (iPhone XS, XR, and newer models).
