How to Use iOS 16 Home Tiles for Smart Lights

The redesigned Apple Home app in iOS 16 introduced interactive accessory tiles that fundamentally changed how users control smart lighting. This article explains how the dual-action tile system works, differentiating between quick on/off toggles and detailed lighting controls, as well as how to customize and arrange these tiles for faster access to brightness, color, and scene settings.

The Split-Control Tile Design

In iOS 16, smart lighting tiles no longer function as a single monolithic button. Instead, each tile is divided into two distinct interactive touch zones:

  • The Icon Button (Left Side): Tapping the circular icon immediately toggles the light fixture or group on or off. When active, the icon and the tile illuminate with the light's current color or brightness level; when off, it shifts to a dimmed, semi-transparent state.
  • The Tile Body (Right Side): Tapping the name or the empty space of the tile opens the expanded control panel without toggling the power.

This separation eliminates the need for long-pressing to reach detailed settings, which was required in earlier iOS versions.

Adjusting Brightness, Color, and Temperature

Tapping the tile body expands a dedicated modal card containing granular controls:

  1. Brightness Slider: A large vertical slider allows smooth dimming adjustments from 1% to 100%.
  2. Color Presets: Six circular swatches appear beneath the slider for quick access to default or frequently used colors and white temperatures.
  3. Color Wheel: Tapping the center of the color palette brings up a full-spectrum color picker and temperature wheel for precise adjustments.
  4. Adaptive Lighting: For supported fixtures, a dedicated Adaptive Lighting button automatically shifts color temperature throughout the day to match natural daylight patterns.

Organizing and Sizing Lighting Tiles

Users can customize the appearance and hierarchy of lighting tiles across the Home view:

  • Variable Tile Sizes: Entering edit mode allows you to switch tiles between standard squares and wider banners, highlighting frequently used room lights or main fixtures over accent lights.
  • Lighting Category View: Tapping the "Lights" chip at the top of the Home tab aggregates all connected smart lights into a single filtered screen, grouped by room, displaying each light's current status and active tile controls in one place.
  • Service Grouping: Multiple light bulbs assigned to a single fixture (such as a chandelier) can be combined into a single unified tile button or separated into individual tiles within the accessory settings.
