How to Trigger iOS 16 Home Scenes by Location

In iOS 16, the Apple Home app allows users to trigger automated home scenes automatically based on the physical location of family members. Using geofencing technology powered by your iPhone or iPad, your smart home can automatically turn on lights, adjust thermostats, or arm security systems the moment you leave or arrive at a designated location.

How Location Automations Work

Location-based automations rely on geofencing, which creates a virtual perimeter around a specific address—typically your home. When your iPhone crosses this boundary, iOS detects the change using a combination of GPS, cellular data, and Wi-Fi networks. The device signals your Home Hub (an Apple TV or HomePod), which then executes the requested scene across your connected HomeKit accessories.

Prerequisites

To use location triggers in iOS 16, ensure the following settings are active:

  • Home Hub: A functioning HomePod or Apple TV set up as a Home Hub on your local network.
  • Location Services: On your iPhone, navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and ensure it is turned on.
  • Home App Permissions: Within Location Services, select Home and set access to While Using the App, ensuring Precise Location is enabled.
  • Share My Location: In Settings > [Your Name] > Find My, ensure Share My Location is enabled and set to "This Device."

Creating a Location-Triggered Automation

  1. Open the Home app on your iOS 16 device.
  2. Tap the + (plus) icon in the top-right corner and select Add Automation.
  3. Choose either People Arrive or People Leave.
  4. Configure the parameters:
    • Location: Defaults to your home address, but you can customize the perimeter or select another address.
    • People: Choose whether the automation runs when Anyone Arrives/Leaves, when the First Person Arrives, or when the Last Person Leaves.
    • Time: Optionally restrict the trigger to specific times, such as "At Night" or "During the Day."
  5. Tap Next, then select the Scene you want to trigger (e.g., "Arrive Home" or "Good Night"). You can also select individual accessories.
  6. Tap Done to save and activate the automation.

Security Restrictions

For security reasons, Apple restricts certain automated actions from running without user confirmation. Scenes containing secure accessories—such as smart door locks, garage doors, or security alarms—will prompt a notification on your iPhone requiring you to tap and confirm before the scene executes. All other non-secure accessories, such as smart plugs, lights, and thermostats, will run autonomously in the background.
