How to Toggle Shared Library in iOS 16 Camera
Apple’s iOS 16 introduced the iCloud Shared Photo Library, allowing users to collaborate seamlessly on photo collections directly from the Camera app. This guide explains how the Camera app toggles auto-sharing to the Shared Library, detailing the on-screen controls, smart automation triggers, and the settings required to control where your photos are saved.
The In-App Toggle Button
When you have an iCloud Shared Photo Library set up, a dedicated icon appears directly in the Camera app interface:
- The Icon: In portrait orientation, an icon showing two people's silhouettes appears in the top-left corner of the screen (or the top-right in landscape mode).
- Shared Mode (Active): When the icon is highlighted in yellow (or without a line through it), any photo or video you take is automatically sent to the Shared Library.
- Personal Mode (Inactive): Tapping the icon places a slash through it, switching the destination back to your Personal Library.
How Automatic Toggling Works
The Camera app can automatically switch between your Personal and Shared Library based on your environment and context. It uses two primary intelligent triggers:
- Bluetooth Proximity: If you are physically near other participants who share the library with you, your iPhone uses Bluetooth to detect their presence. The Camera app will automatically toggle the icon to the Shared Library state so group events and gatherings are captured collaboratively without manual switching.
- Location-Based Sharing (At Home): If you enable the option, the Camera app can automatically default to the Shared Library whenever you take photos at your designated home address.
Configuring Auto-Sharing Behavior
You can customize how aggressively the Camera app toggles this feature on or off:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Photos.
- Select Shared Library, then tap Share from Camera.
- Choose your preferred automation setting:
- Share Automatically: The Camera app automatically toggles on shared mode when participants are nearby.
- Share Manually: The Camera app never toggles automatically; you must manually tap the screen icon to share photos.
- Share When At Home: A secondary toggle that adds home-based automatic switching when enabled alongside automatic sharing.
