How to Stream Audio Stories in iOS 16 Apple News
Apple News in iOS 16 allows Apple News+ subscribers to stream narrated audio versions of feature articles directly inside the application. This guide explains how this native streaming feature works, where to find audio stories, and how the iOS 16 media player handles playback across your system, from the Lock Screen to CarPlay.
Accessing Audio Stories
Audio stories are available through the dedicated Audio tab located at the bottom navigation bar of the Apple News app (currently available in select regions like the United States). In this tab, you will find:
- Apple News Today: A free, daily audio briefing hosted by Apple News editors summarizing the top headlines.
- Curated Audio Stories: Professionally narrated, long-form journalism from top publications for Apple News+ subscribers.
- In-Article Audio: Individual articles that feature audio narration display a "Play" icon directly next to the headline in the standard feed.
The Streaming Mechanism
When you tap "Play" on an audio story, the app utilizes iOS's native
media framework (AVFoundation) to stream the audio directly
from Apple's content delivery servers without requiring you to download
the full file first.
- Integrated Mini-Player: Starting playback opens a persistent mini-player at the bottom of the Apple News interface, allowing you to browse other stories while listening.
- Full-Screen Player: Expanding the mini-player reveals standard playback controls, including 15-second skip/rewind buttons, playback speed toggles (from 0.75x to 2x), and a scrubber bar.
- Queue Management: iOS 16 allows you to queue stories by tapping the "Play Next" or "Play Last" options from the article's contextual menu (the three-dot icon).
System Integration and Playback Controls
Streaming does not stop if you navigate away from the Apple News app:
- iOS 16 Lock Screen: Playback automatically integrates with the redesigned iOS 16 Lock Screen, showing a full-screen or compact "Now Playing" media widget with real-time streaming controls and publication artwork.
- Control Center: You can pause, scrub, and change output devices (such as switching to AirPods or AirPlay speakers) through the standard iOS Control Center.
- CarPlay: If connected to a vehicle, the Apple News app appears in CarPlay, allowing you to stream audio stories hands-free.
- Siri: You can prompt voice streaming by saying commands like, "Hey Siri, play Apple News Today."
