How to Move the Cursor Using the Spacebar in iOS 16
In iOS 16, Apple's virtual keyboard includes a built-in trackpad feature directly tied to the spacebar, allowing users to navigate and edit text with precision. Instead of tapping repeatedly on small text to position the cursor, this gesture transforms the keyboard into a responsive touchpad. This guide explains how to activate the gesture, move the cursor freely, and select text using spacebar controls on your iPhone.
Activating Trackpad Mode
To turn your keyboard into a trackpad:
- Open any app with an active text field (such as Notes, Messages, or Mail) to bring up the iOS 16 keyboard.
- Touch and hold the Spacebar with one finger.
- Keep holding until the letters and symbols on the keys fade away into blank gray tiles.
Once the keys disappear, trackpad mode is engaged.
Moving the Cursor
With your finger still pressed down on the spacebar:
- Slide your finger in any direction—up, down, left, or right.
- The cursor on your screen will follow the exact movement of your finger.
- You are not restricted to the spacebar area; once trackpad mode is active, you can slide your finger across the entire keyboard surface to guide the cursor anywhere within your text.
- Lift your finger from the screen once the cursor is placed where you want it. The keyboard characters will instantly reappear, and you can resume typing.
Selecting Text with Spacebar Gestures
iOS 16 also allows you to select text without leaving trackpad mode:
- Tap and hold the Spacebar to enter trackpad mode, then navigate the cursor to the beginning of the text you wish to highlight.
- While keeping your initial finger on the screen, tap the keyboard area with a second finger. This drops an anchor point.
- Drag your first finger across the text to expand the selection highlight over words, sentences, or paragraphs.
- Release both fingers to bring up the contextual menu options (Cut, Copy, Paste, Share).
