How to Log Medications in iOS 16 Health App

The Medications feature in Apple’s iOS 16 Health app helps users manage and track their prescription routines directly from their iPhone. This guide explains how the system logs scheduled intake, covers the step-by-step process of recording doses through notifications or the app, and details how logged adherence data is stored for long-term health tracking.

Receiving Dose Reminders

When you establish a schedule for a prescription in the Health app, iOS 16 triggers a push notification at the exact time a dose is due. If you have an Apple Watch paired with your iPhone, the reminder syncs across both devices.

You can interact with the notification immediately:

  1. Tap and hold (or swipe and view) the notification banner on your Lock Screen.
  2. Select Taken to instantly log the dose.
  3. Select Skipped if you are intentionally missing or delaying the medication.

Logging Directly Within the Health App

If you dismiss the notification or take your medication outside the prompted window, you can manually log the dose inside the app:

  1. Open the Health app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Browse tab in the bottom right corner and select Medications.
  3. Under the Log section at the top, you will see your medications organized by time (e.g., Morning, Afternoon, Evening).
  4. Tap the circular checkmark next to the specific prescription, or tap the medication card to view details.
  5. Choose Taken or Skipped.

Recording Timing and Custom Details

When logging an entry, the Health app defaults the timestamp to the current time. If you took your medication earlier or later than the scheduled time, tap the time field during the logging step to adjust it to the actual intake time. This ensures accurate adherence records.

Editing Past Intake Records

If you log an entry accidentally or need to retroactively record a dose from an earlier day:

  1. Navigate to Health > Browse > Medications.
  2. Scroll down and select the specific medication you want to review.
  3. Scroll to the History section and tap a specific date on the interactive calendar.
  4. Tap the logged entry to change its status between Taken, Skipped, or Untracked.

Adherence and Data Tracking

Every logged entry updates your overall medication history. The Health app compiles these inputs into daily, weekly, and monthly adherence charts. This data remains encrypted on your device and can be viewed alongside other health metrics or exported as a PDF to share with healthcare providers.
