How to Link Focus Modes to Lock Screens in iOS 16
With iOS 16, Apple introduced the ability to pair your device's visual layout directly to your productivity by linking specific Focus modes to customized Lock Screens. This functionality allows your iPhone to automatically switch its wallpaper, widgets, and notification behavior based on your current activity, such as working, exercising, or relaxing. This guide walks you through the step-by-step process of connecting your Focus modes to individual Lock Screens directly from the Lock Screen gallery or through the Settings app.
Method 1: Link a Focus Directly from the Lock Screen
The quickest way to link a Focus mode to a Lock Screen is directly from the Lock Screen switcher:
- Unlock your iPhone with Face ID or Touch ID, but remain on the Lock Screen.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen until the wallpaper gallery appears.
- Swipe left or right to locate the Lock Screen you want to link.
- Tap the Focus button located near the bottom center of the Lock Screen preview.
- Select the Focus mode you wish to associate with this screen (such as Do Not Disturb, Work, or Personal).
- Tap outside the menu to return to the gallery, then tap the Lock Screen to activate it.
Once linked, activating this Focus mode will automatically display this Lock Screen, and swiping to this Lock Screen will automatically turn on the linked Focus mode.
Method 2: Link a Lock Screen via Settings
You can also assign Lock Screens from within your device settings:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap Focus.
- Select the Focus profile you want to customize.
- Locate the Customize Screens section and tap Choose (or Edit) beneath the Lock Screen preview icon on the left.
- Select an existing Lock Screen from your gallery, or tap the plus (+) icon to create a new one.
- Tap Done in the top-right corner to save your changes.
How the Integration Works
Once a Focus mode is linked to a Lock Screen, the connection is bidirectional:
- Activating via Lock Screen: Whenever you swipe to that specific Lock Screen in the wallpaper switcher, the associated Focus mode turns on automatically.
- Activating via Schedule or Control Center: Whenever that Focus mode is triggered—whether manually via Control Center, by a set schedule, or through a location trigger—your iPhone will automatically switch to the designated Lock Screen.
