How to Insert Emojis with Siri in iOS 16

With the release of iOS 16, Apple updated its Dictation and Siri capabilities to allow users to automatically insert emojis into text messages using only their voice. Instead of forcing users to switch keyboards or manually search for symbols, the updated system recognizes spoken emoji names during voice-to-text input and converts them instantly into the corresponding graphical icon.

How the Feature Works

Apple integrated on-device speech recognition with contextual language processing starting in iOS 16. When you dictate a message, the system analyzes your speech in real time. If the software detects an emoji description paired with the word "emoji," the neural engine identifies the command, suppresses the literal text transcription, and replaces it with the matching Unicode character.

How to Dictate Emojis

To insert an emoji using Siri or keyboard dictation, speak the exact or commonly accepted name of the icon followed by the word "emoji."

  1. Activate dictation via the microphone icon on the keyboard, or prompt Siri to send a text message.
  2. Speak your sentence naturally.
  3. Say the name of the emoji followed immediately by the word "emoji."
  4. Stop dictating or send the message.

Examples:

  • Saying "I will be there soon crying laughing emoji" transcribes to: "I will be there soon 😂"
  • Saying "Great job thumbs up emoji" transcribes to: "Great job 👍"
  • Saying "See you tonight red heart emoji" transcribes to: "See you tonight ❤️"
  • Saying "Happy birthday birthday cake emoji" transcribes to: "Happy birthday 🎂"

Device and Language Requirements

This functionality relies on the Neural Engine processing introduced on modern Apple hardware. To use speech-to-text emoji insertion in iOS 16:

  • The device must have an A12 Bionic processor or later (iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and newer models).
  • The keyboard language must be set to a supported locale, such as English (US, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.), with automatic punctuation enabled in Settings > General > Keyboard > Auto-Punctuation.
