How to Find Archived Emails in iOS 16 Mail

Archiving an email in iOS 16 removes the message from your primary inbox without permanently deleting it, storing it safely out of sight. This guide explains how to locate, search for, and restore archived emails in the iOS 16 Mail app using folder navigation and built-in search tools.

Locating the Archive Folder Directly

Where your archived emails live depends on your email provider. For services like iCloud and Yahoo, messages go to an "Archive" folder. For Gmail, they go to the "All Mail" folder.

  1. Open the Mail app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Mailboxes in the top-left corner to navigate to the top-level menu.
  3. Scroll to the account where the email was received.
  4. Tap Archive (or All Mail if using Gmail).
  5. Browse the list to find your message.

Searching for Archived Emails in iOS 16

iOS 16 introduced improved search capabilities in the Mail app, including instant search suggestions, rich search links, and better filtering across all folders.

  1. Open the Mail app and ensure you are viewing your main Mailboxes list or your unified inbox.
  2. Swipe down slightly to reveal the Search bar at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap into the search bar and type relevant details, such as the sender's name, the subject line, or keywords from the message body.
  4. By default, iOS 16 searches across All Mailboxes, which automatically includes archived messages. If your search is restricted, tap All Mailboxes directly below the search bar to expand the scope.
  5. Tap on the email from the results list to open and read it.

Moving Archived Emails Back to the Inbox

Once you locate an archived email, you can move it back to your inbox:

  1. Open the archived email.
  2. Tap the Reply button (the curved arrow at the bottom right).
  3. Scroll down the menu and select Move Message.
  4. Choose Inbox (or any other folder of your choice).
