How to Expand Lock Screen Album Art in iOS 16

Apple introduced a redesigned Lock Screen in iOS 16 that includes the return of full-screen music player artwork. This article explains how the full-screen music player feature works, how to easily toggle between the compact widget and the expanded full-screen album view, and how iOS handles this visual mode across different media apps.

How the Full-Screen Expansion Works

When playing audio from a supported app such as Apple Music, Spotify, or Podcasts, the Lock Screen defaults to displaying a compact "Now Playing" card near the bottom of the screen with a small square thumbnail of the album art.

To expand the artwork to full screen:

  1. Wake your iPhone to reveal the Lock Screen while media is actively playing.
  2. Tap directly on the small album artwork thumbnail inside the playback card.
  3. The thumbnail will smoothly animate and expand into a large, centered display on the upper half of your display.

To minimize the artwork back to the compact player at any time, tap anywhere on the enlarged album cover or tap the empty Lock Screen background.

Dynamic Visual Changes

Expanding the artwork changes the entire visual presentation of the Lock Screen:

  • Adaptive Color Gradients: The background of the Lock Screen dynamically shifts to a blurred, color-matched gradient sampled directly from the dominant hues of the current album artwork.
  • Separated Playback Controls: The standard controls—scrubber bar, play/pause, skip buttons, and AirPlay controls—remain anchored at the bottom of the screen to maintain easy one-handed operation.
  • Notification Positioning: Notifications continue to roll in beneath the player controls, preventing incoming alerts from covering the expanded artwork.

State Persistence and App Compatibility

The expanded view is a persistent toggle. Once you tap the album art to expand it, iOS 16 remembers your preference. The next time you lock and wake your device, or when the track changes, the player automatically remains in the full-screen mode until you manually tap the artwork again to collapse it.

This functionality is built into the core iOS 16 Now Playing API, meaning it works automatically with most major audio streaming platforms and podcast apps without requiring specialized in-app settings.
