How to Customize Memory Playback in iOS 16 Photos
The Photos app in iOS 16 allows users to deeply personalize their automatically generated Memories. By using built-in playback controls, you can modify background music, apply visual filters, adjust playback pacing, and add or remove specific images to tailor the story exactly to your liking.
Accessing Memory Playback Controls
- Open the Photos app on your iPhone running iOS 16.
- Tap the For You tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Select the Memory you wish to customize to start playback.
- Tap anywhere on the screen while the Memory is playing to reveal the interactive controls and options menu.
Changing Music and Visual Themes with Memory Mixes
iOS 16 includes "Memory Mixes," which combine curated Apple Music tracks with complementary color filters and pacing.
- While the Memory is playing, tap the Music icon (a musical note with stars) in the lower-left corner.
- Swipe horizontally across the screen to preview different combinations of suggested songs, pacing, and visual styles.
- To customize the song individually, tap the Music Note with a Plus icon in the bottom-right corner to browse your library or search for specific tracks via Apple Music.
- To customize the visual style individually, tap the Filters icon (three overlapping circles) and select a look, such as Black & White, Warm Contrast, or Vintage.
- Tap Done once you have selected your preferred combination.
Editing Photos, Titles, and Duration
You can fine-tune the content and duration of the Memory using the options menu.
- While the Memory is paused or playing with controls visible, tap the More button (three horizontal dots) in the top-right corner.
- Select Manage Photos to view a grid of all included media; uncheck photos to remove them, or tap additional photos from your library to add them to the Memory.
- Choose Change Title to edit the heading, subtitle, or font style of the Memory.
- Adjust the playback duration by selecting your preferred length (Short, Medium, or Long) from the options list, which automatically recalibrates the photo pacing to match the music.
