How to Customize Font Styles on iOS 16 Lock Screen

Apple's iOS 16 update introduced extensive Lock Screen personalization, allowing iPhone users to change the typography, weight, and color of the clock display. This guide walks you through the exact steps to enter customization mode, select different font styles, adjust colors, and save your new design to give your device a fresh, tailored look.

Step 1: Enter Lock Screen Edit Mode

  1. Unlock your iPhone using Face ID or Touch ID, but do not swipe up to open the Home Screen.
  2. Press and hold (long-press) anywhere on an empty area of the Lock Screen.
  3. Tap the Customize button at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Select Lock Screen on the left preview to begin editing.

Step 2: Open the Font & Color Menu

  1. Tap directly on the digital clock widget near the top of the display.
  2. A Font & Color menu will slide up from the bottom of the screen.

Step 3: Choose Your Font and Adjust Thickness

  1. Browse through the available font types displayed in the horizontal row.
  2. Tap on any font to preview it immediately on the clock.
  3. If supported by the selected font, a slider will appear beneath the font options. Drag the slider left or right to decrease or increase the font thickness (weight).
  4. (Optional) Tap the Globe icon in the top-left corner of the menu if you wish to change the numeral system to Arabic, Arabic Indic, or Devanagari.

Step 4: Select a Font Color

  1. Swipe horizontally through the color swatches below the font selection to pick a preset color.
  2. Drag the saturation slider that appears under a selected swatch to make the hue lighter or darker.
  3. To select a custom shade, swipe to the far right and tap the multi-colored color wheel, where you can use a grid, spectrum, sliders, or the eyedropper tool.

Step 5: Save Your Changes

  1. Tap the X button on the Font & Color panel to close the typography options.
  2. Tap Done in the upper-right corner of the screen.
  3. Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to apply the look to both screens, or select Customize Home Screen if you want a different aesthetic for your app pages.
