How to Bypass Focus for Urgent Contacts in iOS 16

Apple's iOS 16 offers robust Focus modes to reduce distractions, but critical communications cannot always wait. This guide explains how to bypass Focus silencing for urgent contacts using three distinct methods: adding allowed individuals to a Focus profile, setting up the Emergency Bypass feature in individual contact cards, and enabling repeated calls for time-sensitive situations.

Method 1: Add Allowed Contacts to a Focus Profile

You can customize individual Focus modes (such as Do Not Disturb, Work, or Sleep) to permit calls and notifications from designated individuals.

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone running iOS 16.
  2. Tap Focus and select the profile you want to customize (e.g., Do Not Disturb).
  3. Under the Silence Notifications section, tap People.
  4. Select Allow Notifications From.
  5. Tap Add People (the plus icon) and choose your urgent contacts from your address book.
  6. Tap Done.
  7. Under Allow Calls From, choose Allowed People Only or select a specific group such as Favorites.

Method 2: Enable Emergency Bypass for Specific Contacts

Emergency Bypass overrides all Focus modes and the physical silent switch, guaranteeing that calls or texts from a chosen person always ring through.

  1. Open the Phone or Contacts app and select the contact you want to prioritize.
  2. Tap Edit in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap Ringtone.
  4. Toggle on Emergency Bypass at the top of the screen.
  5. Tap Done.
  6. (Optional) Tap Text Tone and toggle on Emergency Bypass if you also want their text messages to sound an alert regardless of your Focus settings.
  7. Tap Done again to save the changes.

Method 3: Enable Repeated Calls

If an urgent situation arises from someone not on your allowed list, iOS 16 can let a call break through if the person calls repeatedly in a short timeframe.

  1. Open Settings and tap Focus.
  2. Select your active or desired Focus profile.
  3. Tap People, then tap Allow Calls From.
  4. Toggle on Allow Repeated Calls.

When this setting is enabled, a second call from the same person within three minutes will not be silenced, ensuring urgent matters reach you promptly.
