How Siri Works with Freeform on iOS 16
Apple introduced the Freeform app in iOS 16.2 as a collaborative digital canvas, and Siri acts as a hands-free tool to navigate, manage, and automate boards. While Siri does not provide granular canvas-editing capabilities, such as drawing or moving objects, it connects directly with Freeform through core system commands, Siri Suggestions, and the iOS Shortcuts ecosystem.
Basic Navigation and App Control
The most direct way Siri interacts with Freeform is through system-level app commands. You can prompt Siri to launch the app directly by saying:
- "Hey Siri, open Freeform."
If you frequently collaborate on specific boards, Siri can also use conversational context or spotlight indexing to help locate content on your device when prompted to find recent files or notes related to Freeform.
Siri Shortcuts and Automation
The deepest interaction between Siri and Freeform occurs through the iOS Shortcuts app. In iOS 16, Apple expanded App Shortcuts, allowing Siri to execute multi-step routines that involve Freeform without requiring complex manual setup.
Through Siri Shortcuts, users can:
- Create New Boards: Trigger a custom voice command to instantly generate a blank board.
- Open Specific Boards: Set up automated triggers that open a designated project canvas when you say a phrase like, "Hey Siri, open Brainstorm Board."
- Combine Workflow Actions: Integrate Freeform into broader routines. For example, a morning routine Shortcut can open a specific Freeform task board alongside your calendar and reminders.
Contextual Siri Suggestions
Siri tracks on-device usage patterns to provide proactive suggestions for Freeform across iOS 16:
- Lock Screen and Search: Siri Suggestions will surface recently edited Freeform boards in Spotlight search when you pull down on the Home Screen.
- Share Sheet Suggestions: When sharing links, images, or documents, Siri suggests Freeform as a destination if you regularly drop those media types onto your canvases.
- Calendar and Messaging Context: If you collaborate with specific contacts via Messages or have a scheduled meeting, Siri can suggest opening shared Freeform boards relevant to those participants.
Current Limitations
Siri's interaction with Freeform is focused on navigation and high-level workflow triggers rather than in-app canvas manipulation. At present, Siri cannot:
- Add specific elements (such as sticky notes, shapes, or text boxes) via voice dictation directly into a board.
- Move or format existing canvas objects.
- Read aloud the visual contents or layout of a canvas.
For inside-the-canvas accessibility and navigation, Apple relies on system Voice Control rather than Siri. Siri remains focused on getting you into the right board quickly and automating entry points into the workspace.
